Circumcision in the spotlight
|
 |
| Lobbyists have been trying to get a bill against involuntary circumcision passed, under grounds that it is a human rights violation and males should be allowed to make an informed decision when they are old enough to understand the physical effects of the procedure. Already, many states have dropped insurance coverage of circumcision, as it is considered medically unnecessary. However, there is big money in circumcision as foreskin is used in laboratory testing and products like skin creams (for example, the one promoted by Oprah recently called TNS Recovery Complex by SkinMedica). The United States is the only first world country that still encourages circumcision. Most men in the rest of the world, except for countries that circumcise for religious reasons, are intact. As awareness about circumcision grows, more and more politicians have been backing this bill. Will it finally pass this year? |
