Limited Access
NASA is scheduled to retire the Orion spacecraft in 2010 and launch the next-generation Orion spacecraft in 2015, leaving a 5-year gap where the United States must rely on Russia for human access to space. This puts Russia in a monopoly position where we and the rest of the world are at the mercy of the supplier. With tensions between Russia and Georgia and other foreign relations matters, it is possible that government to government issues could impact our space agency's relationship with Russia. Do you think that the 5-year gap without a space shuttle will hinder our access to space?
