Molecular Breast Imaging (or MBI)
| To check for breast cancer, physicians have traditionally relied on mammograms, or a type of x-ray. With recent advancements in medical technology, today, the molecular breast imaging (or MBI) is being tested in women with substantial dense tissue. Through the use of MBI, women are given an intravenous dose of a short-acting tracer of radiation that is absorbed by abnormal cells and glows to detect an affected area. In a recent test, MBI found 10 out of 13 tumors, while mammograms detected 3 out of 13 tumors.
Will MBI replace the mammogram for women at average risk of breast cancer? |
